Heat Inactivation of Influenza Viruses—Analysis of Published Data and Estimations for Required Decimal Reduction Times for Different Temperatures and Media

(1) Background: Influenza is a viral infection that has claimed many millions of lives over the past 100 years, and there always risk new influenza virus will emerge cause another pandemic. One way to reduce such potential be heat inactivation. The question in this study how much sensitivities previous viruses differ. If they are very similar, it expected can inactivated with same parameters as viruses. (2) Methods: Through literature search, published inactivation results compiled analyzed using Arrhenius models regression equations for decimal reduction times different temperatures media determined. (3) Results: There about 50 studies on human avian so far, showing large differences sensitivity media. However, within single medium between rather small. (4) Conclusions: At temperature 60 °C, reduced by 4 or more orders magnitude approximately 30 min almost all media, likely true virus. Further studies, especially viruses, would desirable.
